The establishment of cane as AgForce’s fourth commodity is one step closer, with a Special General Meeting of the Invicta Combined Growers’ Organisation (ICGO) today endorsing the move.
General President Georgie Somerset said she was pleased that ICGO members saw the value in joining AgForce as its founding cane members.
“This is a significant moment in AgForce’s history of proud and vigorous advocacy for agriculture, a step nearer to representing the first new commodity in more than 20 years and speaking with a stronger, more united voice,” Mrs Somerset said.
There are still several pieces of due diligence which AgForce must complete to ensure existing members and commodity groups will benefit from the arrangement. It is understood that ICGO will be undertaking similar activities.
Firstly, the two organisations must agree a legally binding Memorandum of Agreement that will formalise the terms under which ICGO will become AgForce Cane, an incorporated body with its own independent Board and a seat on the AgForce Board.
It is anticipated that if the checkpoints are passed, cane will become a commodity board by the beginning of the new financial year.
